Driver's Ed for students under 18
38 hour courses are available to students ages 14 years, 9 months - 17 years. The classroom instruction is 30 hours over 4 days, provided by Mrs. Bridget Fulton, M.Ed. +30. The LA OMV written exam is administered at the end of the final day. Behind-the-wheel instruction totals 8 hours and is usually scheduled in 2-hour increments. The course cost is $400 which includes 30 classroom hours, written exam, driver's guide, 8 hours behind-the-wheel instruction, and a certificate of completion.
Students may register with $100 deposit but must be paid in full before driving instruction. As of 9/4/18 according to state law, to complete registration for the course, students must bring a Temporary Instruction Permit and birth certificate along with custodial parent or guardian with ID and any custody papers. To receive a TIP, students present to the DMV with an original birth certificate or a certified copy, Social Security card, signed school attendance letter, and custodial parent or legal guardian with ID (along with custody papers). The cost of this TIP is approximately $36, but there is no additional expense to upgrade it to a permit.
Road Skills Testing for License
Students must maintain a permit for at least 180 days AND be at least 16 years old before testing for an intermediate license. Students who are at least 17 are not required to have a permit and may test for full license. Road skills tests are conducted by the DMV or by Third Party Testers. The fee for a road skills test at Union Station 318 is $40. Students must have permit, original birth certificate, another school attendance letter, and custodial parent or legal guardian with ID and any custody papers. Current inspection stickers, license plates, and insurance cards are required for road skills tests or if requested in advance, road skills testing may be done in one of our vehicles for a $20 fee. The cost to upgrade from a permit to license is approximately $20 at the DMV.
